Making a Website?
So, you've been seeing a lot of websites recently, and you love it. You decided to make one yourself too. Or maybe you are already making one, but you're not quite sure of how you should do it exactly. Well, most of the times you'd be able to do it by watching how others do it. But if you want a faster alternative, here's something that might help you for a bit.
× The Layout
This is an important part of your website, when you want people to actually stay on your website. If it's painful to look at, they won't stay any longer than a second. You have two options to do this: use pre-made layouts, or make your own one. I prefer the last way, because I love making layouts. And with this way, getting awards is much easier. And, I learn more of it. Pre-made layouts are most of the time just copy and pasting, so you barely learn anything of it. But, if you're new with this, it'd be an useful way to learn HTML and CSS. This is exactly how I've done it, and how I could've manage to learn things on my own when I was about eight years old.
× Credits
Even though when you've made your own layout, contents, whatever, there's always some credits that you need to mention. If you don't know why you should do that, then just imagine how you would feel if you made something original and someone took it without permission and credits on you. Yes, it'd feel awful. At least, for me it would. At first I didn't really liked to credit myself either, but now I've learned that it's just a nice gesture. To me, it's fun when someone credit me. Makes me feel special for a second. * laughs *
× Writing
This is also one of the few things that I had developed from time to time. I know, it sounds silly, but it really did made a huge difference. I usually types with the sticky caps, which is definitely not nice. Why you say? I'll demonstrate the sticky caps to show you why.
WhEn I wAs LiKe EiGht, ThAt Is WhEn I sTarTeD tO kInD oF CoDe, I wRoTe ExAcTlY LiKe ThIs. BuT tHeN i WaS oNlY wOrKiNg On A pErSoNaL hOmEpAgE, oN sOmE aSiAn CoMmUnItY. ThIs TaKeS HeLlA lOnG tO tYpE tOo, So It KiNd Of HaVe No AdVaNtaGe WhAtSoEvEr. Typin lyke diz wun du it either. God, I don't even know how to do that. That's just beyond my stupidity. Either way, all of this is a big no-no.
× Colours
I find this one rather obvious. It's the same thing with the layout: no one will stay if their eyes hurt because you used the wrong combinations of colours. Think about it. Would you love reading things in yellow? Or in pink? On personal websites and homepages it would be fine, as long as you don't do it on very light backgrounds. Light background goes with dark font colour, dark background with light colours. In the end, if you don't care about how many people likes your site, it's all about your own taste.
× Be Original
Ok, I admit it. My layout isn't that original, nor are my contents. But the way I write, the way I made my layout, it's something no one can fake it. Well, they can, but they can never make or find the same picture like I did for this layout. And I talk helluva lot. I actually rarely see websites with actual so-called "Autobiographies". But then again, It proves that I'm a real geek. Give your website your own touch on it. This way, people might go back sometimes just for that.
× Get Hits
Ok, so you want more hits for some kind of reason. To me, it just indicates of how good I've done my job. It gives me a good feeling somehow. But yeah.. since I'm a little bit lazy, I usually end up having a dead website. I just have to keep trying.
To achieve more hits, go to other websites to exchange links. Write things on their guestbook, maybe because you have something in common with the owner. Whatever it is, making a chat can catch someone's attention easier. What you also can do, is requesting other website owners to look at your website, with the goal of seeing if you're qualifying for an award. If you do, you get linked on their site, people will see that, they might click, and voila. Hits.
The most easy way to do it is of course, just advertising your website everywhere. Google can be handy too, although I still haven't figured out yet of what kind of words I should submit to get the most visitors with. There are also a lot of places who lets you put on adds for free. If I weren't this lazy as I am now, I would've been more specific. For now, bear with me.
× That's it?
That's about it I guess. In the end, making a website is to show yourself to the internet world. And to do that, you have to find a way that you like the most. Even though I had to push myself to go do all these contents, when I do it, I have fun. And that's what's the most important. If you have absolutely no intention on continueing, please take a break and see if you want to keep doing it. If you decided not to, then I guess it's just something that you can't change. Whatever it is, good luck with it. ^^
